Fitness: Physical Fitness and Spirituality

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."(1 Corinthians 6:19, 20)

Are you caring for your physical health as much as you are your spiritual health? Christians, with regard to weight, diet and exercise, are most likely representative of the general population.  However, everywhere we go these days we are being reminded of the importance of  these disciplines.  Our goal in exercise and physical fitness should not be to improve the quality of our bodies so that other people will notice and admire us.... the goal of exercising should be
to improve our physical health so we will acquire more physical energy to devote to our spiritual goals.

Three of the most critical disciplines we should practice with hopes of surviving the challenges and stresses of our daily lives are: eating right, sleeping well and exercising regularly, says Tom Hafer, Pastor and Physical Therapist, and anyone who hopes to "live long and prosper" will recognize the value of these disciplines and make them a central part of their daily lives.

But, don't be extreme in these areas by  focusing entirely on spirituality and neglecting your physical body or putting too much attention on the form and shape of your physical body and neglect your spiritual growth and maturity... neither of which indicates biblical balance.  According to 1Timothy 4:8, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” While that verse certainly gives credence to the need for exercise, by saying that exercise is valuable it prioritizes exercise and says godliness is of greater value. So, while our spiritual aspect is, biblically speaking, more important, we should give balance to both the spiritual and physical aspects of our health. And, while we are to take great care of our bodies, the bible warns us against vanity in 1 Samuel 16:7, Proverbs 31:30 and 1 Peter 3:3-4.  Issues of rest, work, diet and exercise rituals are crucial for us, so let's establish healthy rituals in these areas:
  •  exceptionally healthy meals
  •  a daily period for walks / exercise
  •  a wind-down, lights-out time
  •  generous amounts of sleep

You want to be physically and spiritually well for a balanced life. So make a point to study the Word of God and begin to make the connections between a strong faith and everyday lifestyle choices.  You will be filled spiritual and  practical ideas about food, exercise, and total wellness.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31
